After about three years as a butler, became publican of the Cock Inn at Blakeney, Gloucestershire. Then moved to St John’s Street, Coleford, to open a shop as a pork butcher. Later, after his shop failed, he went back to butlering as butler to Sir Charles Palmer of Newland. Later still, he became butler to Mr Jenner-Fust, squire of the village of Hill, between Thornbury and Berkeley.
