Of Tresunger, Pennitenny and the Leeward Islands. Assumed the name of Buckley before that of Mathew by HM’s Licence as inheritor of that family’s estates in St Kitts. Served for many years in the army and in the Coldstream Guards. Represented the borough ofAthlone and later Shaftesbury, co Dorset, in Parliament. Was Governor and Commander-in- Chief of the Bahamas. He was 18th in lineal descent from King Edward I, and 19th from Philippe III of France, through the families of Howard, Knollys and Byam (see Burke’s Royal Descents, family of Byam).
