Left home in Amersham before the 1851 census to run a bakery and grocery business in Norwood Green, London. Was also the postmaster. At the time of the 1861 census he had three employees apparently living with him: Mary Rouse, age 15, servant; Thomas Strathson, age 14, errand boy; and William Parentchee (?), age 25, labourer.By 1881 he was farming 32 acres at Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire. In 1886 bought land at Petersfield. Lived in retirement in Southsea, Hampshire.
According to Kelly's Directory 1883, page 389, John Birch was farmer, landowner and dealer at Whitethorn House, Stoke Mandeville. Stiff, wet clay. Crops grown: wheat, beans, oats.
Farm (32 acres 2 roods and 0p) was sold by auction by William Gurney on 25 June 1879.
